MESSAGES FROM EDEN
(Miniature Lesson #5) GOD FED ADAM AND EVE FROM THE TREE OF LIFE
“And the Lord God formed man of the slime of the earth: and breathed into his face the breath of life, and man became a living soul. And the Lord God had planted a paradise of pleasure from the beginning: wherein he placed man whom he had formed. And the Lord God brought forth of the ground all manner of trees, fair to behold, and pleasant to eat of: the tree of life also in the midst of paradise: and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” - Genesis 2:7-9
Through logic and scriptures support, we have determined that Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Life. Nevertheless, it is wise to be thorough and ask another question. For from this question we shall see God’s perfect love for man. The question is: Did God feed Adam and Eve from the Tree of Life? The answer is in the detail! In Genesis 2:7 (‘God formed man…a living soul.’), we are shown from the sacred author that the human person is a body and soul composite. The human soul is a spiritual substance, and it is eternal. Even so, the eternal soul can gain heaven or suffer loss in hell for all eternity. This reality was even expressed by our Lord Jesus Christ when He said, “And fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell.” - Matthew 10:28
When our Lord spoke of the destruction of the soul in hell, He does not mean the disappearance of the soul by annihilation but rather the separation from God and the punishment of the wretched soul in hell for all eternity, for God is Life and to be separated from Him is death. Therefore, the basic understanding of the Christian doctrine of the immortality of the human soul will be beneficial to our understanding of this current discussion.
“And many of those that sleep in the dust of the earth, shall awake : some unto life everlasting, and others unto reproach, to see it always.” - Daniel 12:2
Since man is a union of spirit and matter, this duality within us requires us to be nourished physically as well as spiritually. This is a key point. Immediately, right after man has become a ‘living soul’ in Genesis 2:7 (notice the obvious), there were three types of trees in the garden: the trees that bear fruit, one that bears the fruit of everlasting life (the Tree of Life), and one that bears the fruit of death (the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil - the Devil’s tree). Since God planted trees that bear fruits to feed and nourish Adam’s and Eve’s physical bodies, should God then neglect to feed our first parents spiritually? Shouldn’t God give Adam and Eve the wisdom that man is a union of spirit and matter? Man is a body and soul composite. Should it then be surprising that God gave Adam and Eve a matching gift?
God planted ordinary fruit trees to nourish Adam’s and Eve’s physical bodies, and He also planted a tree that possesses the power to give everlasting life to nourish Adam’s and Eve’s everlasting souls. Is this too hard to understand? Should not the Spirit of God touch and sanctify the spirit of man? The Tree of Life is a physical substance yet it can transmit the spiritual power of everlasting life because God rest upon it.
HERE ARE THE MATCHING GIFTS (the ordinary trees and the Tree of Life) given by God TO SHOW MAN HIS OWN DUALITY. For man is a body and soul composite. Man is spirit and matter. Again, why was the Tree Life in the Garden of Eden in the first place? God fed Adam and Eve from the Tree of Life to show man that he must grow spiritually in the Divine life. Everlasting life must begin on earth. Again, why was the Tree of Life planted in the Garden of Eden in the first place? Logic! Logic! He chose to transmit the gift of everlasting life through matter (the Tree of Life) to give man this wisdom - man like this matter (the fruit from the Tree of Life) could be elevated and transform by the power of God’s presence and become a vessel that holds eternal life. For truly, man can hold everlasting life within his body, for man is a temple of God.
“Know you not, that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? But if any man violate the temple of God, him shall God destroy. For the temple of God is holy, which you are.” - 1 Corinthians 3:16-17
While on earth, Adam and Eve must prepare themselves for the transformation of their bodies into eternal beings for heaven and the perfect way to prepare for this transformation is to eat from the Tree of Life that God rested upon. Man must begin his union with the Eternal God on earth before he can enter heaven. Eternal life starts right here right now on earth, and Christ’s words in John 6:55 confirms this truth. Here is more wisdom. Creation does not belong to Adam and Eve nor to the Devil, God must visit man and rest upon His creation to bless and show man that creation belongs to Him.
By using matter to transmit the gift of everlasting life, God revealed to man that man in the same way must use matter for his own sanctification. Man can use materials to build a house for his family, or he can use materials to create weapons to kill his neighbors. Man can use material (the computer) to post photos of love ones on the Internet or man can post pornographic pictures of degradation on the Internet. This was the Devil’s strategy all along, and it still is. Since God can transmit Divine life through matter, then matter can also transmit death. Strange isn't it that people trust in their medicines but not in the Word of God (John 6:54-55)? They don't believe in the Medicine of Immortality.
This was the Devil’s game plan from the beginning! The gift of everlasting life transmitted through matter revealed that matter belonged to God, and it should be used to glorify God. Matter/material should be a tool that points to heaven, not as a tool for misuse. Unfortunately, man has misused God’s creation to hurl himself into hell. That is why God must transmit the gift of everlasting life through matter to teach man this truth. A pill (creation) can heal a sick person or a pill (creation) can kill a baby in the womb. Oh yes, God and His children will use creation to save creation, and the Devil and his children will use creation to destroy creation. Thus, life or death can be transmitted through creation just like the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
Now, we must get back to the question at hand. Is there a proof-text that will confirm that God did feed Adam and Eve from the Tree of Life? Yes! Actually, there are several of them! Since God is the good and perfect parent, should He not then give Adam and Eve the perfect gift? Why was the Tree of Life created by God in the first place? Should God tease man with the perfect gift and not give it to him? This is what theologians have failed to understand - they have failed to understand the wisdom of God. From the very beginning (when Adam and Eve were created), the gift of everlasting life came from the Tree of Life; the gift of everlasting life was not automatically given to Adam and Eve at the moment that they were created. Why? Because God wanted to give Adam and Eve this wisdom: He wishes to use the material world to save Adam and Eve, for God knew the plan of the Evil One.
For from the very beginning and up until now, the Evil One and his children have been constantly using the material world for man’s physical as well as spiritual destruction. The Devil uses a tree to destroy Adam and Eve. And the Devil's children will also use a tree to destroy the Just Man (Jesus Christ), but God will use a tree (the Tree of the Cross) to atone for the sins of the world and open up the gates of heaven. God will use creation to save creation! So I ask you again, what would be the perfect action for God to perform? Should He withhold the gift of everlasting life or should He give the gift of everlasting life through the Tree of Life? Or did God plant the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden just for a meaningless decoration? For what was the purpose of the Tree of Life? Shouldn’t the Spirit of God touch the spirit of man? But what about the supporting verses that will confirm that God fed Adam and Eve from the Tree of Life? Since we know that God is perfect, therefore, His gift must also be absolutely perfect.
If He said that He is perfect, then HE MUST FULFILL HIS SWORN TESTIMONY:
“Be you therefore perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect.” - Matthew 5:48
Since His words are truth, THEN THE ALMIGHTY GOD MUST CARRY OUT HIS PROMISE TO BE PERFECT: “God is not a man, that he should lie, nor as the son of man, that he should be changed. Hath he said then, and will he not do? hath he spoken, and will he not fulfill?” - Numbers 23:19
If God said that HE is perfect, then GOD’S WORDS ARE TRUTH AND AN OATH TO MAN. MAN IS OBLIGED TO BELIEVE THIS.
“For men swear by one greater than themselves: and an oath for confirmation is the end of all their controversy. Wherein God, meaning more abundantly to shew to the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, interposed an oath: that by two immutable things [His promise and His oath], in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have the strongest comfort, who have fled for refuge to hold fast the hope set before us.” - Hebrews 6:16-18
SINCE GOD DECLARED THAT HE IS PERFECT (Matthew 5:48), THUS HIS LOVE FOR MAN MUST ALSO BE PERFECT. FROM THIS LOGIC, THE OUTPOURING PERFECT LOVE FROM GOD TO MAN BOUND HIM TO GIVE MAN THE PERFECT GIFT!
From the outpouring of God’s perfect love comes the perfect gift. This is the Theology of Divine Perfection - God must fulfill His sworn promises of His perfection; therefore, He must act according to His oath.
Thus, from the very beginning of man, God must give man the perfect revelation, must reveal to man the perfect plan, and must give man the perfect gift. God must operate according to the order of perfection. For if He failed to do these three perfect acts (give man the perfect revelation, plan and gift), then God would not be perfect, and He would have failed to carry out His sworn testimonies of His own perfection to man. Since there is no greater gift than the gift of everlasting life, then the gift of everlasting life is the perfect gift from the Perfect God.
“He that keepeth the fig tree, shall eat the fruit thereof: and he that is the keeper of his master, shall be glorified.” - Proverbs 27:18
Yes, Adam and Eve were the keeper of the Garden of Eden; thus, they were the ‘keeper’ of their ‘Master.’ Therefore, their ‘Master’ did ‘glorified’ them with everlasting life before Original Sin.
*Glorify (Definition)1) a: to make glorious by bestowing honor, praise, or admiration b: to elevate to celestial [heaven] glory* courtesy of http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary /glorify
Yes, God will glorify Adam and Eve through the Tree of Life for His love for them is perfect. Therefore, His gift must also be perfect. And no gift is more perfect than the gift of everlasting life. Since God did reveal to man that He is perfect, then He must give man the best and perfect gift in keeping with His oath:
“Every best gift, and every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no change nor shadow of alteration.” - James 1:17
Remember through logic, there is no gift more perfect than the gift of everlasting life. So here is the question: God Who is perfect should do which of the following?
A) Feed Adam and Eve the perfect gift from the Tree of Life so that the union with the Everlasting God can begin on earth.
B) He should not feed Adam and Eve the perfect gift from the Tree of Life so that the union with the Everlasting God SHOULD NOT take place on earth.
And here we are using our logic supported by numerous scriptural verses.
The answer: Since God operates according to the order of perfection, therefore, God could not hold back His perfect love, for if He did, He would not be perfect. Therefore, the perfect gift came down from heaven to earth and rested upon the Tree of Life. God gave the perfect gift of Himself - His Wisdom and the Fullness of His Life to Adam and Eve through the Tree of Life.
“Wisdom is a Tree of Life.” - Proverbs 3:18
So did Adam and Eve accepted the perfect gift from God? Yes, for to reject the perfect gift from God would have been a sin, and we know that they did not sin until they ate from the Devil’s tree. Thus, this is the very reason Adam and Eve before Original Sin had everlasting life; it was because they ate from the Tree of Life that God rested upon. Therefore, when our first parents partook of this Divine sustenance, they received the infusion of Divine Life from God. When they ate from the Tree of Life, they communicated union with the everlasting God. Therefore, anyone who denies God’s perfection and rejects His perfect gift, must answer to God on Judgment Day.
